In August 2015 I started the Discover Cymru Instagram feed.
To find and share some of the best photography from across Wales. I was already following some amazing Welsh photographers on my personal account, and wanted to create a community that would help get Wales some more attention on the platform.
The feed started with this shot below, taken by yours truly. It’s now one of the most boring on the feed – but you have to start somewhere, right?
Two years later I’ve been astonished by the support.
We hit 20,000 followers just before Christmas 2016, 30,000 followers in summer 2017 – and close to 90,000 pictures have been shared on the #DiscoverCymru hashtag that I created.
I’ve learnt masses about parts of Wales I knew little about. I grew up in the Brecon Beacons, so Welsh beauty is nothing new to me, but some of the areas I’ve discovered have truly blown me away.
If you skim through the feed you’ll see shots that have won awards, been shown at galleries and published across the media.
You’ll see the changing of the seasons – our contributors are out there through in the rain rain, shine – and more recently, snow.
And you’ll see shots from photographers who are just starting out on their journey, people who are exploring their first camera or trying their hand with a smartphone. Some of the work I see from new photographers is really incredible, it’s amazing to see some of the fresh takes on locations that get snapped by the pros regularly.
It’s been a pleasure to help promote so many great photographers. Take a look through their feeds and you’ll see what I mean.
In 2016, to celebrate the amazing photography, we asked 12 of our most prolific contributors from the last year to choose some of their favourite shots for a 2017 calendar which we sold over Christmas. You can find out more about the great photographers featured here.
This year we decided to open up submissions to the wider community (now topping 33k followers!). I was amazed by the response. We had hundreds of amazing pictures submitted and narrowing it down to just twelve wasn’t easy. We’ll be announcing those selected during October.
I’m spending some time building this website. I hope it will become a hub for people to share amazing stories, images and destinations from across Wales.
If you’d like to contribute to the website with words, images or anything else, I’m only an email away.
